Create a Syllabus

BYU Learning Suite provides instructors with the option to create a syllabus from within the Learning Suite interface. Instructors can edit:

Instructors/TAs Information

Step One:

Click on the Course Title to open the course.

Step Two:

Click on the Syllabus tab.

Step Three:

Select the Use BYU Learning Suite Syllabus radio button to use the Learning Suite interface to create a syllabus. You can also upload your own syllabus, link to another website, or choose not to include a syllabus at all. Click Save and Continue.

Note: If you choose to Use BYU Learning Suite Syllabus or Upload a syllabus it will automatically appear on syllabi.byu.edu.

Step Four:

You will be directed to a page displaying instructor information. Click Edit to update your contact information and office hours.

Step Five:

A dialog window will appear. Update your email, office phone, and office location by typing the appropriate fields.

Step Six:

The following picture and table explain more about adding instructor and TA information.

[1] To add office hours, click the checkbox corresponding to the days you are in the office.

[2] Set the time for the office hours by using the From: and To: drop down menus.

[3] If your office hours fall on different days and at different times (for example Mondays from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm and Thursdays from 9:00 am-11:00 am) you may add additional office hours by clicking Add Office Hours.

[4] Click the By Appointment Only checkbox if your office hours are by appointment.

 

Step Seven:

Click +Add Field to add additional fields to your personal information. This can be used to explain how to best contact you, discuss your background, or provide other information that is relevant to your students about you.

Step Eight:

A dialog window will appear. Type the name of the additional field in the Field Name text box. Click Save.

Step Nine:

Type the information you would like to include in the text box. Click Save to update your information.

Step Ten:

You can also add a co-instructor by clicking +New Instructor.

Note: Co-instructors and TAs have full access to your course, so add users with discretion.

Step Eleven:

Search for your co-instructor by typing using his or her’s last name or BYU Net ID in the correct field. Click Search.

Note: If you search by last name, a list of users will appear. Make sure to select the correct individual. If possible, search using the instructor’s BYU Net ID.

Step Twelve:

Once the co-instructor has been found the Edit Instructor dialog window will appear. Update the information and click Save.

Step Thirteen:

Once the instructor information is correct, click Save and Continue.

Step Fourteen:

Click +New TA to add a TA to your course.

Step Fifteen:

Search for your TA by typing using his or her’s last name or BYU Net ID in the correct field. Click Search.

Note: If you search by last name, a list of users will appear. Make sure to select the correct individual. If possible, search using the TA’s BYU Net ID.

Step Sixteen:

Once the co-instructor has been found the Edit TA dialog window will appear. Update the information and click Save.

Step Seventeen:

Once the TA information is correct, click Save and Continue.

Course Materials and Content

Step Eighteen:

Click the checkbox(es) next to the section(s) you wish to include in your syllabus. Each item selected will act as a section heading in your syllabus under which you can input information. The items already listed are not required fields and will not be included in your syllabus unless they are selected.

Step Nineteen:

Click +Additional Field to add a section not listed.

Step Twenty:

A dialog window will appear. Type the name of the additional field in the Field Name text box. Click Save.

Step Twenty-one:

Click Save and Continue.

Step Twenty-two:

Note: This step reflects the process for setting the course prerequisites, grading policy, participation policy, attendance policy, classroom procedures, study habits, and teaching philosophy.

[1] Type your course description in the text box provided.

Click here to learn how to edit your text using the Rich Content Editor.

[2] You can either type directly into these fields, or copy and paste information from an old syllabus using the Clipboard icon (using this button will help preserve previous formatting).

[3] Click Save and Continue.

 

Step Twenty-three:

The preset Materials section is connected to the BYU Store’s database. Any texts or materials linked to your course through that database will automatically appear on this page. Click Edit Booklist to change any required course materials. You will be directed to the BYU Store external website. Click Save and Continue.

Note: Learning Suite hosts course material information through the BYU Store website. For more information help from the BYU Store, please call 801-422-3004.

Step Twenty-four:

Determine how final grades are calculated by setting the grade scale. Grade scales can be created based on points, percent, or distribution. Click Save and Continue. Click here to learn more about setting a grade scale.

Step Twenty-five:

Learning outcomes set the purpose for the course. Click +New course outcome.

Note: Learning outcomes added here in Learning Suite will automatically appear on the Learning Outcomes website (learningoutcomes.byu.edu) listed under this course and your name.

Step Twenty-six:

A dialog window will appear. Type the title of the learning outcome and the description in the appropriate text fields. Click Save to add your learning outcome.

Step Twenty-eight:

Click Save and Continue.

Assignments

Step Twenty-nine:

The Assignments section allows you to create and edit assignments for your course. Assignments can also be accessed from the BYU Grades, Schedule, and Home tabs. Changes made to an assignment in any one of these areas will apply to that assignment everywhere in Learning Suite. Click here to learn more about assignments. Click Save and Continue.

Policies

Step Thirty:

The Policies section will display the three mandatory University policies that are permanently included in your syllabus. Add University additional policies by click the appropriate checkbox. To add personal policies, click +Additional field. Click Save and Continue.

Step Thirty-one:

View the University policies. Click Save and Continue.

 

Step Thirty-two:

Type your personal course policies in the text box provided [1]. Click here to learn how to edit your text using the Rich Content Editor. You can either type directly into these fields, or copy and paste information from an old syllabus using the Clipboard icon [2] (using this button will help preserve previous formatting). To erase previous formatting and make all old text uniform to Learning Suite text, click the Remove Format button [3]. Click Save and Continue.

Layout

Step Thirty-three:

In the Layout section, you can change the order in which sections will appear in your syllabus. To move a section or sub-section, click and hold the section title [1]. Drag and drop the section to the new location. You can change the order of sections within a category, move sections between categories, and rearrange the order of categories. Click the Pencil icon to edit the title of any syllabus section or sub-section. Click Save and Continue.

Note: This changes the way your syllabus looks when printed and in Student View. However, it will not change the order of the tabs in Instructor View.

Distribution

Step Thirty-four:

There are several ways to share your syllabus. 

[1] You can share your syllabus with anyone regardless if they are a user on Learning Suite by distributing the link.

[2] You can download your syllabus by clicking Download Word (.docx)

[3] You can print your syllabus. Click the checkbox next to the sections you wish to print and click Print Syllabus. Click Save and Continue.
