Create an LTI Learning Module Assignment

BYU Learning Suite is LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) compliant. LTI allows the seamless connection of external learning tool applications with Learning Suite. Learning module assignments in Learning Suite allow students to access learning modules through the assignment without needing an account. Depending on the learning tool (e.g. Moodle) you use, grades may be set up to pass from the module to BYU Grades.

Note: The learning module assignment is currently a beta version. Not all learning modules have been tested. Contact the OIT Service Desk (801.422.4000, for any problems.


Step One:

Log in to your Learning Suite course and click Assignments under the Course Home navigation menu.


Step Two:

Click +New assignment.


Step Three:

Open the Type drop down menu and select Learning Module….

Note: The four tabs across the top will adjust to show a Learning Module tab at the end instead of Turnitin. Turnitin cannot be used with learning module assignments.


Step Four:

Fill in any necessary information for the assignment. Click here for more information about creating assignments.

Select the Learning Module tab [1].

In the Configuration Type drop down menu, three options are available, select Launch Url Configuration (LTI) [2].

Option Function
Launch URL Configuration This method requires that you enter a launch URL, a key, and a secret. Information is found on the learning tool website and the olocation varies depending on the learning tool.
XML Configuration URL This method requires that you enter an XML configuration URL. Information is found on the learning tool website and the location varies depending on the learning tool.
Captivate Module (xAPI) This method is a way for instructors to link Adobe Captivate modules to Learning Suite. Click here for more information on creating Captive Module (xAPI) assignments.


Step Five:

The example provided here is from the learning tool Ayamel. An Add to an LMS button is located on the homepage of the learning tool.


Step Six:

A dialog window appears when the button is selected that contains the consumer key, shared secret, and the Launch URL. Copy and paste the information into the corresponding entry fields in Learning Suite.
